Hi, Dan! Exactly how did you mic up the acoustic...
I believe that was just a 4033 about a foot from the guitar. These days, my set up is generally a Pearlman TM-1 about a foot away, a Mojave MA200 at the same spot but 45 degrees off axis, and another Mojave about five feet away for room sound. I feel like stereo miking is important if you’re not going to double. But the acoustic on Keep Breathing (played by the majestic Chris Kuffner) is...

i've heard mixed opinions about putting...
You’re definitely supposed to take all your master bus effects off before sending your mixes off to a masterer. Some people leave their first compressor on, but, y’know, to each his own. The secret to mixing something so that it can become super loud during mastering is by getting your mix as loud as you want it WHILE your mixing. If you just get your mix to sound right without any...

You are so cool for having this forum! What are...
Aw thanks! Just trying to keep up with Joneses. My vocal chain for ladies is generally either a Pearl TM1 or a Mojave MA200 microphone into a Neve Portico 5012 Preamp and then into a Neve Portico 5043 compressor. Ingrid uses the MA200. I’ve tried the TM1 on her, but it sounds too round. This is the thing, and this is all general, nothing EVER ALWAYS works: If a singer has a very round...

what sample rate do you record at... and why?
CD (WAV) audio uses a 44.1khz rate. This makes it possible to make a tone as high as 22.05 khz. Our hearing range goes up to 20 khz, and most people can’t even hear that, so 44.1khz is really all you need. If you use a 96khz or 192khz sampling rate, you will better resolution in the high end, but not actual higher tones. In the end, no matter what sampling rate you record in, it always...

So What are the benefits to using rack compression...
I use a Neve Portico 5043 Compressor on almost everything I track going into pro tools. I like having things compressed to tape a little bit, generally peaking at about 2 dB of reduction. Hardware compressors have a slightly different life to them than plug ins, and I like having that extra little push from them. It’s definitely not necessary to use compression on the way in. In...
