what would you do if a person in your band isn’t so good (slacking off, always late for practice etc.)? i met another guy who’s looking for a band and i really rather have him play. but the slacker is one of my best friends.

I had that problem in high school. I ended up losing one of my best friends by kicking him out. The good news is that if you’re in high school (which I’m making an assumption about, and could totally be wrong), you probably don’t have to lose sleep over your band. When you get to college, you’re gonna find a totally sick new band, full of musicians who really want to work.

The band I was in in high school was a really great learning experience as far as band arranging goes. However, once I got to college, I stopped playing music with them, and over time, stopped hanging out with any of them. I put together a new band freshman year, which ended up being Fire Flies, the band I was in for the next seven years.

If you value your friend’s friendship a lot, don’t kick them out. Have a conversation with him/her about how you care about them in the long run, and would love it if they’d still play with you, but the slacking needs to stop. Then they’ll either say “Yes, I’ll stop slacking,” or “No, I won’t, get someone else” Hopefully the latter won’t lead to anger. But maybe it will. If that can’t be taken well, then your friend doesn’t really respect your feelings, so fuck it.

If you’re older than 18, get the new band mate. THIS IS YOUR FUCKING LIFE WE’RE TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!

Ask me anything
