I use a Neve Portico 5043 Compressor on almost everything I track going into pro tools. I like having things compressed to tape a little bit, generally peaking at about 2 dB of reduction. Hardware compressors have a slightly different life to them than plug ins, and I like having that extra little push from them. It’s definitely not necessary to use compression on the way in. In fact, you have more control if you don’t. But since I mix completely in the box, it’s good to have a little bit of hardware flavor on most things.
Ryan Freeland, who mixed Jenny and Ingrid’s last albums, uses hardware compression when tracking. When he used to assist for Bob Clearmountain (big famous mixing engineer) he’d tell Ryan he was brave for compressing to tape, since once it’s recorded, you’re committed to at least that amount of compression.
But what are you going to do with your life? Sit around and watch Futurama all day? (yes)
