Every Thursday I will share a story about a song from the new album here on Tumblr, until I run out of songs (math suggests this will go on for a total of eleven Thursdays).
LOVE FOR LONG is the track 1 on AN UNWAVERING BAND OF LIGHT. It’s in the Old Faithful of keys (for me), C Major. During the album arranging sessions, Dan and I felt like we couldn’t get out of a country-feel rut for this song… until Dan called me one night and said “What if this song sounded like ‘Cecelia’ being played by Tom Waits’s band??” and I was like “Heeeell yeah” and then he started building the bones of the beat that drives the song.
The imagery and narrative ideas that informed the writing of the lyrics were inspired by the nocturnal ghost town photography of Bert Steinhilber, the magic inherent to traveling through America by automobile, and the idea of a Natural Born Killers-style romance: desperate, limitless, and utterly inscrutable.
Watch me performing the song for What’s the Ruckus:

Cecelia is one of my favorite songs. And Tom Waits is one of my favorite humans. So there.
